On Day 3 of Building Innovation 2014—The National Institute of Building Sciences Annual Conference and Expo, activities kicked into high gear with the Integrated Resilient Design (IRD) Symposium, Sustainable Buildings Industry Council (SBIC) Symposium, Facility Maintenance and Operations (FMOC) Symposium and Plenary Symposium.
In the morning, the IRD Symposium: Measuring and Improving Resilience of Existing Facilities, looked at ways to identify deficiencies in resilience and a path to their mitigation. The speakers provided perspectives from federal, state and local governments, with a particular focus on the safety of schools.
At the SBIC Symposium: Beyond Green™: Guidance for Life-Cycle Performance sponsored by Legrand, panelists addressed a number of ways to effectively achieve high performance across a building's life cycle. In addition, the Beyond Green™ Award Winners provided their insights on putting high performance into practice.
During the FMOC Symposium: Improving Life-Cycle Savings through Intelligent Building Data, attendees became acquainted with information exchange tools to improve facility maintenance and operations.
The Exhibit Hall was open for its second day, giving attendees more time to see the latest in building sciences and technologies.
At the Beyond Green™ Awards Luncheon sponsored by Virginia Tech, SBIC recognized the winners of the 2013 Beyond Green™ High-Performance Building Awards. The top prize in the High-Performance Buildings Category went to DPR Construction's Phoenix Regional Office. In the High-Performance Products Category, SageGlass earned an Honor Award, First Place. RDH Building Engineering's Enclosure Renewal approach earned it recognition as an Honor Award, First Place recipient in the Innovations for High-Performance Buildings Category. In addition, Merit Awards went to Chemeketa Community College, Salem, Oregon for its new Health Sciences Complex; to Retrofit Chicago, an initiative to reduce energy consumption in Chicago by 20 percent by 2017; and Skidmore, Owings and Merrill Indoor Air Quality Research for development of a methodology for improved use of natural ventilation.
In the afternoon, the Plenary Symposium: Advancing Life-Cycle Performance, brought together members of the Institute's Coordinating Council to discuss the collaboration of building industry professionals in achieving life-cycle performance. Two panels consisting of representatives from ten of the Institute's standing councils and committees talked about ways to move the industry forward.
Other scheduled activities during the day included meetings of the Building Seismic Safety Council (BSSC) Provisions Update Committee (PUC) and Building Research Information Knowledgebase (BRIK); as well as the buildingSMART alliance United States National CAD Standard/National BIM Standard-United States Educational Session.
The National Institute of Building Sciences Annual Reception and Awards Dinner, where the Institute will host its 40th Anniversary Celebration, is on the schedule for tonight.
Day Four of the Conference will continue with the buildingSMART alliance Symposium, Commissioning Symposium, Building Enclosure Technology & Environment Council (BETEC) Symposium and Low Vision Design Committee (LVDC) Symposium. Also convening are the SBIC Board of Direction and Member Meeting, BSSC Board of Direction, the LVDC Meeting, BSSC Member Meeting and Commissioning Council.
