Although progress has been made on the use of
building information modeling (BIM) for project delivery, the use of data
throughout the facility life cycle is still evolving. This is true for owners of
larger and smaller facilities, including federal agencies. During the Healthcare Facilities
Life-Cycle Workshop: Moving Data through Early Planning into Design and
Operations, to be held Monday, January 6, 8:30 am – 5:00 pm as part of
Building Innovation 2014:
the National Institute of Building Sciences Conference and Expo, speakers
will look at how several agencies in the federal government integrate facility
management (FED iFM) into their programs.
The U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) Military
Health System and U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), combined, manage in
excess of 210 million square feet of healthcare facilities and just completed a
series of projects through the National Institute of Building Sciences centered
on planning, design and operations of facilities. The team developed strategic
plans, road maps and proofs of concept using BIM, geographic information systems
(GIS) and facility management (FM).
The team also created a strategic plan for the
enhancement and sustainment of the Space and Equipment Planning System (SEPS), a
health system planning tool jointly developed by DOD and VA, as well as a
five-year road map for the Defense Medical Logistics Standard Support Facility
Management (DMLSS-FM).
The results of these projects have implications
for BIM, GIS, FM and open standards. The intent of this full-day workshop is to
share the results of these studies. Another important intent is to engage others
in the healthcare industry, both in the federal and private sector, in a plan of
action for the future.
The Workshop will introduce a strategic vision
for FED iFM; share the results of current federal agency initiatives that are
striving for the FED iFM vision; engage with private sector owners, architects
and professional organizations to build a bridge of collaboration and shared
interests in achieving the FED iFM vision; and enlist technology service
providers to build platforms, applications (apps) and app marketplaces to access
agency data repositories and to foster and enable the realization and success of
the FED iFM vision.
